The 2008 figures also show a 52 per cent increase in the number of calls we received from members of the public wanting to give up an animal."

More details from the RSPCA website...

"Dumped pets pay price of recession" (Guardian)

View the full article

Mayor's charity 'night at the dogs'

The mayor of London’s Merton borough is planning a charity night at the dogs in October. Mayor Martin Whelton is planning a night at the dogs on Friday 10th October at Wimbledon Stadium as a charity event.

It is very important that we make clear that the exploitation of muted and defenceless greyhounds should never be used to raise funds for charity. It is likely that the Mayor is not aware of the true horrors of greyhound racing. Therefore we are urging supporters to write to the Mayor, asking him to reconsider this event and educate him about the truth behind the tracks. There is only a short time until the event, so please write without delay.

Please keep all correspondence polite to ensure that the interests of the greyhounds and their welfare are taken seriously.

Sample letter

QUOTE

Dear Mayor M Whelton,

I am writing regarding your proposed charity event at Wimbledon greyhound racing stadium on 10th October, and urge you to reconsider such an activity.

The exploitation of greyhounds by the greyhound racing industry should not be condoned by yourself and Merton Council by your proposed event at Wimbledon. It is my belief that greyhounds should not be abused, neglected and exploited in the name of entertainment, sport or charity.

An Associate Parliamentary Group for Animal Welfare report (The Welfare of Greyhounds, May 2007) concludes that “a minimum of 4,728 greyhounds are unaccounted for” each year in England and Wales alone and “it is reasonable to assume the majority of these dogs will be destroyed.” The report also notes that “this figure is likely to be a significant underestimation of the true scale of the problem of unwanted dogs being destroyed [in the racing industry]”.

Racing is a real hazard for the gentle greyhounds; injuries from collisions or poor track surfaces and heat exhaustion, to name just two. Moreover the conditions in which racing greyhounds are kept and they attention that they receive leaves much to be desired.

I urge you not to let the abuse, neglect and exploitation to occur in the name of charity, or under your patronage as Mayor.

For more information on the welfare of greyhounds, and other sighthounds, please visit the website of Sighthound Welfare Trust; www.sighthounds.org.uk.

Yours sincerely,

Contact information
Mayor's Parlour
Merton Civic Centre
London Road
Morden,
SM4 5DX
Telephone: 020 8545 3517
Fax: 020 8545 3242
Email: mayor@merton.gov.uk

Sighthound Welfare Trust will be writing to the Mayor asking him to reconsider this event with further information on greyhound racing. However, the more people that write makes the our voice for the greyhounds stronger.

View the full article

Stray dog survey shows eighteen stray dogs 'put to sleep' daily

The Dogs Trust annual Stray Dogs Report revealed that an estimated 96,892 stray dogs were taken in by local councils in the UK last year; 6,710 of which were put to sleep for want of a home¹

Despite the sustained efforts of both animal welfare organisations and local authorities, on average 11 stray and unwanted dogs an hour are handled by local authorities. Each hour:

•	5 are reunited with their owners
•	3 are taken to welfare organisations
•	1 is rehomed by local authorities
•	And every 80 minutes a dog is put to sleep¹

¹In some cases dogs may have been put to sleep due to aggression or ill health

Full regional statistics are available:
regional_stats.pdf ( 34.58K )
Number of downloads: 0

The charity believes the most effective and humane way of reducing stray dog numbers in the long-term is best achieved through education, neutering and microchipping. Last year microchips helped reunite 30% of strays with their owners.

View the full article

Walthamstow track update

The latest indictions are that Walthamstow will close as planned. However, it is important to ensure that it does remain so.

In July the All Party Parliamentary Greyhound Group (APPGG) pledged support for short-term lease options that could reprieve greyhound racing at The Stow. It was also reported that there could be a consortium to be led by Australian millionaire, Richard Codd, to offer the property developers - to whom the land has been sold – over and above the price they paid in order to ‘Save the Stow’. Most recently it appears that this campaign has lost momentum and no more meetings have been planned with the company who purchased the land in May, until after the track’s closure on 16th August.

Unfortunately the overwelaming majority of media coverage for this issue, has been lamenting the 'sad' loss of the racing industry's flagship stadium. Please help ensure better media balance and help educate the public.

Radio One DJ Nihal was one such person who was sorry for the loss of Walthamstow. Please send polite comments to educate him about the plight of racing greyhounds:
Contact him here- http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio1/nihal/email.shtml - or here - http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio1/help/contactus/

On Saturday The Guardian also ran a feature on the future of greyhound racing. The article has very little concern for the welfare of the dogs involved. Information on contacts and complaints can be found here - http://www.guardian.co.uk/information/guar...,824307,00.html

View the full article
